Roland G. “Sonny” Currier, 84, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his residence on Thursday, Jan. 22, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Exeter, N.H., Jan. 29, 1930, he was the son of Oscar and Jennie E. (Colcord) Currier. He attended Exeter Public Schools, and while in grammar school, his family relocated to Haverhill. He then attended Haverhill Public Schools.
A Korean War Veteran, Currier served on the USS Benner and the USS Yosemite in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1952.
Currier, or “Sonny” or “Rolie Polie,” as he liked to be called, was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his loving family. He had a great sense of humor and was king of the one-liners. In his younger days he played drums, he loved music and played in bands before rock and roll came along. His taste in music included Les Brown, Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. He was a movie buff, loving older movies and was a Garfield fan and Three Stooges Fan.
He leaves his beloved wife of 41 years, Ruth R. (Hill) Currier, their children; Barbara Currier-Locke and her husband, Jeffrey, of Merrimac, Colleen Currier, of Danville, Jeffrey Currier and his wife, Sandra, of Arizona, Kathy Szpyt, of Haverhill, Dianne Kimbrell, of Haverhill, Patricia Currier-Martin and her husband, Thomas, of Haverhill, and JoAnn Currier, of Bradford. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Sunday evening from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. Haverhill. A celebration of his life will be held at 7:30 in the funeral home.
