Louise (Mitchell) French, 93, Pollard School Teacher

Louise (Mitchell) French, 93, the last, and youngest, of eight children, passed away Jan. 16,  at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley. Louise was the wife of the late Edward C. French to whom she was married for 62 years.

Born in Kentucky on February 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Orin and Macy (Morris) Mitchell.

French earned her teaching degree from Western Kentucky University. Following her marriage she moved to Rutland, Vt., and dedicated herself to teaching. In 1954 they moved to Haverhill, and she began a 20-year career teaching third grade at the Pollard School in Plaistow, N.H., before retiring in 1986.

French and her husband enjoyed traveling, and were able to visit various worldwide destinations, and 49 states–all but Oklahoma. She enjoyed reading, and was a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. She took great pride in being an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.

French is survived by her daughter, Martha Brown and husband Craig of Bradford; sister-in-law Eleanor Mitchell of Kentucky; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Betty French of Brownsville, Vt., and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Edward J. French, and sister of the late James Mitchell, Alton Mitchell, Delta Kinser, Cecil Mitchell, Albert Mitchell, Snow Johnson and Edwin Mitchell.

Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m., at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Donations in Louise’s memory may be made to the VFW Santa Parade, 64 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830.
