Thomas E. ‘Tom’ O’Brien, 86, Neighborhood Activist

Thomas E. “Tom” O’Brien, 86, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7,  in the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, New Hampshire. He was surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Miriam (Amirault) O’Brien with whom he shared 30 years of marriage and his grandson Alexander Howe.

Born in Lowell on Au. 10, 1928, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Malloy) O’Brien. O’Brien was a graduate of Lowell High School and received his Degree in Accounting from Bentley College. He was a resident of Lowell until he and his wife moved to Haverhill to raise their family. He relocated to Franconia, N.H. to be by his daughter and her family in 1996.

O’Brien worked as a Computer Analyst for the former Western Electric / Lucent Technologies until his retirement in 1987. He was a politician at heart and was very politically active while he resided in Haverhill. He was a devoted grandfather and enjoyed time spent with his family.

He is survived by his two children, David O’Brien and his wife, Cathy of Haverhill and Susan Howe and her husband, David of Bow, N.H.; five grandchildren, Stacey and Stefanie O’Brien and Andrew, Evan and Meredith Howe; two sisters-in-law, Mary Amirault of Danville, N.H. and Theresa Daggett of Haverhill. He was also predeceased by his seven siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday in St. John the Baptist Church, 114 Lincoln Ave., Haverhill at noon. Visiting hours will be held prior to the Mass from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Avenue, Haverhill. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill.
