Donald C. Griffin, 89, of Sandown, N.H., formerly of Andover, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, with his family by his side at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill.
He was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late, Jerald S. and Marguerite (Sullivan) Griffin. Raised on Long Island, N.Y., he was a graduate of Manhasset High School, class of 1944. A WWII Veteran, Griffin enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps, proudly serving in occupied Germany until his honorable discharge in 1946. Continuing his education, he was a graduate of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, Mich., graduating with a Degree in Ceramic Engineering and received his Master’s Degree from Northeastern University.
Griffin was a ceramic and electronic engineer and a pioneer in the glass to metal seals. He was a founding partner and vice president of Electronic Products Inc., Newburyport.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy R. (Benner) Griffin, of Sandown, N.H., five children; Diane (Griffin) Desjardins, of Haverhill, Dorian (Griffin) Topalian and her husband, Michael, of Worcester, Douglas J. Griffin, of Hampstead, N.H., Dennis W.J. Griffin and his wife, Vickie, of Temple, N.H., and Donna (Griffin) Weatherbee and her husband, Gerald, of Stokesdale, N.C. He also leaves grandchildren, Julie (Desjardins) Hayashi and her husband, Koji, Laura Desjardins, Kristin (Desjardins) Morita, and her husband, Masanori, Matthew Griffin, Dennis H.P. Griffin, Jacob Griffin, Jack Griffin and Sydney Griffin, two great grandchildren, Lana Rose Hayashi and Soma Jaid Hayashi, a brother, Kenneth Griffin, and sister, Marguerite Griffin Irving, both of Port Washington, N.Y. He was predeceased by his son in law, George J. Desjardins III.
Funeral services for Griffin will be announced at a future date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Salvation Army, 395 Main St. Haverhill, MA 01830.
