Weather Causes School-Opening Delay

Get out the ice scraper. The Merrimack Valley awoke this morning to ice-coated roads, walkways and vehicles as a “Nor’Easter” moved through the region. Haverhill Public schools announced a 90-minute delay to school opening today.

Warming temperatures are expected to bring heavy rain at times later in the day and a flood watch will be in effect, according to WHAV meteorologist Steve Lavoie. Local road crews continue treating icy road surfaces due to freezing temperatures during the overnight drizzle.

“At 3 a.m. this morning, we began sanding and salting our 400 miles of roadway with 10 sand trucks. Our men and women are working as hard and as fast as they can, but the roads are still treacherous. We have one of the largest land masses in the state so it takes time,” Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini said.
