Fifth District Governor’s Councilor Eileen R. Duff was the winner over her Haverhill challenger, Maura L. Ryan-Ciardiello, 55 percent to 45 percent. Ryan-Ciardiello did win her home city of Haverhill 9,396 to 8,016 votes.
Democrat Duff returns for a second term, winning 141,182 to Ryan-Ciardiello’s 115,376. As of 4 a.m., Haverhill School Committeewoman Ryan-Ciardiello had not called Duff to concede.
Former state Rep. Barbara A. L’Italien, Andover, is returning to the legislature—this time as a state senator filling the seat vacated by Barry Finegold. She defeated Republican Alex Vispoli.
Incumbent Rep, Diana DiZoglio, of Methuen and who serves one Haverhill precinct, defeated Rosemary Connelly Smedile of North Andover. Similarly Methuen Democratic incumbent Rep. Linda Dean Campbell, with four Haverhill precincts, beat Republican Al DeNuccio.
Haverhill’s Roseann L. Ehrhard Wofford, Republican, was soundly defeated by incumbent Congresswoman Niki Tsongas. Wofford’s strongest placement was in her home city where she garnered 7,413 votes to Tsongas’ 10,583 votes.
“I have always appreciated that this is an independent-minded district and that I can never take any vote for granted. It is why I have made staying in touch with the people I represent one of the hallmarks of my office, and I pledge to continue to keep my door open as an accessible representative to the individuals and families, entrepreneurs, employees and employers at businesses small and large, and local organizations and leaders who are working every day to better our communities,” Tsongas told supporters.
In nearby Lawrence, Marcos A. Devers successfully defended his Democratic seat by only six percentage points over former Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua.
State Representatives Brian S. Dempsey and Leonard Mirra were uncontested in their respective districts.
