Area Communities Prepare for ‘Trick or Treat’ Friday

Merrimack Valley communities surrounding Haverhill are gearing up for their annual “Trick or Treat” events on Friday.

Safety advice from area police departments include wearing bright clothing, limiting ventures for candy seekers to within their own neighborhoods and for parents to check their children’s candy and treats before they are consumed. Hours in Methuen, and in the town of Andover, are from 5 to 7 p.m.  In Plaistow, a “toddler trick or treat” event for pre-elementary school children begins at 10 a.m., Friday, at Plaistow Town Hall. Pre-registration with the Plaistow Parks and Recreation department is required. For all others, the evening hours in Plaistow are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. “Trick or Treat” in Sandown, N.H. will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday.

While Haverhill held its “trick or treat” last Saturday, a recent poll found Haverhill residents are equally divided on the scheduling debate, according to Mayor James J. Fiorentini. In Haverhill, a city ordinance sets “trick or treat” on the last Saturday in October. Any change would require approval by the City Council. Some residents complain that the city’s schedule attracts many trick-or-treaters from outside the city and few from their own neighborhoods. However, Fiorentini points out that Haverhill will fall in line with other communities next year, when October 31will be on a Saturday.

War of the Worlds, Tonight at 10 p.m.

Tonight is WHAV’s annual Mercury Theater on the Air presentation of the “War of the Worlds,” a play about a Martian invasion of Earth loosely based on the 1898 novel by H. G. Wells. The Oct. 30, 1938 CBS radio version used simulated interruptions of music with news bulletins to report the attack. The so-called “panic broadcast” can be heard in its entirety, beginning at 10 p.m., tonight, on WHAV. An encore presentation will also air at 1 a.m.
