Senate Election Revives L’Italien’s Political Life

Former state Representative Barbara A. L’Italien breathed new life into her political career last night by winning the Democratic nomination for state senate for the Andover area.

L’Italien defeated Pavel M. Payano and Doris V. Rodriquez, both of Lawrence. L’Italien, a former state representative that served several communities, including Haverhill, lost that seat after redistricting. She will face off against Republican Alex Vispoli, an Andover selectman. The Andover senate seat opened up when incumbent state Senator Barry R. Finegold chose to run for state treasurer. Despite a bump up in publicity following his support of Market Basket workers, Finegold lost the party nomination to Deb Goldberg.
