Market Basket Workers Rally for Part-Time ‘Hostages’

Protesting workers from the Market Basket supermarket chain are keeping the pressure on current company management to resolve the leadership dispute, despite moves Thursday to eliminate work hours for part-timers.

The group known as “Save Market Basket” continues to protest outside company headquarters in Tewksbury and is encouraging those affected part-timers to join them.

The group also alleges current company leaders, “want to hold our part-time associates hostage. They want to let them know that they are not able to be scheduled for work next week but they also will not be laid off where they then could collect unemployment.”

Meanwhile, “Save Market Basket” is dismissing, as “planted stories,” reports of a possible outside bidder for the 50.5 percent stake in the business held by the rival relatives of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas. They maintain that associates and customers will not return to Market Basket until Arthur T. is reinstated, and any outside suitor will “end up with a shell of a great business.”
