Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini and other local officials congratulated the city’s ten newest police officers. The mayor was joined Friday by Rep. Brian S. Dempsey, who provided additional state funding of $2.4 million to help the city cover some of the old Hale Hospital debt.
According to a press release, the Mayor has directed some of the revenue to hire new police officers in order to maintain a healthy level of police presence in the city. Also on hand Friday were Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro and Haverhill City Councilor Melinda Barrett.
“We know how important the public’s safety is, and look forward to continuing to make the City of Haverhill a safe place for everyone to live and work,” said Fiorentini.
Last year, the city’s budget added five new police officers, bringing the total to the highest number of police officers over the past five years. The newly sworn in 10 additional police officers brings the total number of police officers to the highest number the city has had in years to 89. There are three more positions available.
