George Tashjian, 88

George Tashjian, 88, of Haverhill, died peacefully Friday morning, July 4, at the Country Manor Nursing Home, Newburyport.

He was born in Marseille, France, March 15, 1926, son of the late Koren and Lucy (Tenekjian) Tashjian. His family moved to Haverhill when he was an infant and was educated in the Haverhill school system, graduating from Haverhill High School. During World War II he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Piedmont, attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. Mr. Tashjian was present for the surrender signing in Japan. While in the Navy he was awarded a World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Pacific Theatre Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal.

For over 50 years he owned and operated Tashjian Rug Company in Haverhill which he founded with his late wife Lydia. He was considered one of finest flooring tradesmen of his generation and was a connoisseur in the buying, selling, hand repairing and appraisals of oriental rugs. He was a past member of the Haverhill Exchange Club and the Mr. and Mrs. Club at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church and was involved in many local groups and organizations. He was an avid golfer and Boston sports fan. He was a past president at Far Corners Golf course and a thirty five year member at Haverhill Country Club and was always sought after by players and pros alike to give lessons. His true passion however, was spending time with family and friends and most importantly with his late wife, true love and soul mate Lydia (Darakjian) Tashjian who passed away in 2002. He and Lydia hosted many memorable holiday events, parties and summer cookouts. He enjoyed spending the summers on Little Squam Lake, winters in Florida, a good game of cards and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

His survivors include three sons, David G. Tashjian and his wife DeAnna of Haverhill, Mark H. Tashjian and daughter-in-law Anne Tashjian of Groveland, Phillip Tashjian of Studio City, CA, four grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, Michael and Sara, great grandson Tristen as well as many nephews and nieces. Mr. Tashjian was predeceased by his sister, Agnes Papazian. Contributions in his memory may be made to Sarah’s Place, 180 Water St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours on Tuesday, July 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St.

His Funeral Service will be on Wednesday morning, July 9 beginning at 10:00 at the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 in The Armenian Church at Hye Point, St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, 110 Main St., Haverhill.

Burial with Military Honors will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill.
